Taxis in Marrakech: A Comprehensive Guide

Taxis in Marrakech

Taxis in Marrakech are a very popular and affordable way to get around the city and visit nearby locations. Cab costs are low, and this transportation is more comfortable and convenient than the crowded public buses, which every so often leave without a schedule. But, if you don’t know any idea how taxis work in Marrakesh, the ride can cost a fortune.

Types of Taxis in Marrakech

There are two types of taxis in Marrakesh: the small one’s so-called petit Taxis, and the big ones known as Grand Taxi. Petit cabs can seat up to 3 people, plus they are only for local city traffic, they cannot take you outside the city limits, and keep in mind that, if you take the petit cab alone, the driver can take other passengers in the same direction. Petit taxis have multiple meters, which allow them to pick up more than one person during their journey (except for the airport, so don’t be surprised to see your taxi stop to pick up an extra person).

A Grand taxi can take you anywhere inside the city as well as outside the city. It can seat up to 6 passengers, 5 in the back and one in the front next to the driver. It is a shared vehicle, and you only pay for your seat. If you see a large taxi with an empty seat, stop and ask which direction the driver is going. Each grand cab driver has a fixed course to a defined destination. Often it is only 5 DH per seat no matter how far inside Marrakech.

How to Get a Taxi in Marrakech

Taxis in Marrakech are easy to get. To take one on the street, all you need to do is find one of the beige taxis with a taxi symbol on top and make a sign with your hand that you want him to stop near you. Another way to get a taxi is to go towards a nearby taxi station if you don’t know any just ask one of the locals and he will guide you to one within the range.

Marrakech Taxis Prices

Like anywhere else in the world, petit taxi prices in Marrakesh are set by distance and you pay the price displayed on the meter. However, cab drivers often forget to turn on the meter or complain that it does not work, to avoid being scammed always ask the driver to turn on the taximeter otherwise leave the cab immediately.

If you choose to go on with a Grand Taxi, you will have to pay a fixed price for that particular path (due to the coronavirus circumstances Grand taxis can now transport only 4 people, so extra charges may be required), and for the Petit taxi, you have a base fare and then an extra cost depending on the route distance. You can only pay the taxi driver in cash and not by credit card.

  • Base fare – 7 Dhs
  • Price per km/day (06:00 to 20:00) – 2 Dhs
  • Price per km/night (20:00 to 06:00) – 4.2 Dhs
  • One-minute stop – 1 Dhs
Marrakech Private Taxi

A private taxi is the best option even if it is a bit more expensive compared to the aforementioned ordinary taxis; however, you can easily avoid the hassle that most travelers tend to encounter. Once you prebook your Marrakech airport transfers or Marrakech day trips you will get countless advantages as your driver will meet and greet you upon arrival holding a signboard with your name on it.

You can pay online before you set foot in the Marrakech airport, which will save you from finding out the right exchange rate especially if you are visiting Morocco for the first time. Another advantage is that most drivers can fluently speak your language and can, as a result, be easy to communicate with.
